National Guard to face potential loss WASHINGTON (AP) The Army National Guard faces a potential loss of about 100,000 men before next summer as draft-induced volunteers finish their obligated service, Pentagon officials say. This will be offset only partially by enlistments of men with prior service in the regular Army and by 17 and 18- year-old recruits.

The prospect now worrying defense authorities is that the Guard will fall significantly below its authorized strength of 400,000 men for the first time in years, even if the draft is extended. Draft calls are certain lo be lower, so that few young men are likely to sign up with the Guard to avoid conscription into the Army. Defense officials say a weakening of the Guard has serious implications for national security. The Guard, they say, has been given a more important role in the nation's war plans than ever before since the Regular Army is being slashed to its NM Guard sets plans In response to President Nixon's announced desire to convert the nation's armed services to an all volunteer force, the New Mexico National Guard has assigned a recruiting and retention officer for the state. Captain Leopoldo M.

Vasquez, of 3108 Siringo has been promoted to this position by Major General John P. Jolly, adjutant general of New Mexico. Captain Vasquez formerly was staff assistant for the Guard's Officer Candidate School in Santa Fe. He served in the Marines during the Korean War and joined the guard in 1957. The captain said that there are several plans in the works at both the federal and the state level aimed at keeping men in the Guard, as well as recruiting new men to fill up vacancies.

But officials said they are not optimistic, despite Defense Department plans to ask Congress for money to pay enlistment and re-enlistment bonuses and to provide a number of incentives to join the Guard. The wave of losses this fiscal year will come from the dropoff of most of the young men who enlisted in the Guard in 1965, at a lime when the Unite3 States was building up for the war in Vietnam with increased draft calls. These inen were exempted from (he draft when they chose to enlist for about six months of active duty training after which they returned home as civilians with an additional years of obligation to drill regularly with a Guard or Reserve unit. Only about 10 per cent of these young men are staying in the Guard after their six- year obligation expires. Guard officials report.

This Reserve Enlistment Program was such a popular refuge from the draft during the Vietnam war that the Guard was filled up. The waiting list at one point contained more than 100.000 names. Hector was taken away by the Game and Freshwater Fish Commission when some residents of Lake La- Corse complained and was released in the vicinity of Myakka State Park. That was the last time Trier saw Hector until a few weeks ago. Hector's journey home took him through about 140 miles of river and drainage ditches, Trier estimates. "How he found his way here and how he remembered us after two years will always be a mystery to me," Trier said.

(AP) Miss America Viet visit planned ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) Miss America of 1972 says she plans to make a trip to Vietnam to entertain American troops, but she hopes the fighting will be over before she has to go. Laurie Lea Schaefer, who won her crown Saturday night, said she thinks President Nixon is doing a good job to end the Southeast Asian conflict. "He should be allowed to follow his program because he knows a lot more about it than the majority of normal citizens," the 22-year-old Bexley, Ohio, beauty said Sunday. Miss Schaefer said she didn't get to sleep until 5:30 Sunday morning, and although she held her first news conference as the nation's reigning beauty queen a scant four hours later, she didn't look tired.

At the news conference after a week of showing off her singing ability and beauty, Miss America got a chance to air her views. She said she was a conservative in politics, fashion and morals, and that most LEGAL ADVEHTISKMENT Visit Us Today At Coronado Shopping Center Serving Hours and Sat. and Sun.
