MARGARETALLEN Special soloist scheduled Church scholars put faith as prime task NEW YORK (AP) A group of church scholars, analyzing why church membership and participation have slumped during the past decade, say it often is because churches have not concentrated on their prime task: nurturing faith. They've tended to stress working for social betterment rather than on instilling religious premises for it, according to several of the experts.

They say such efforts are fine, but don't basically energize church life. The first essential to church vitality is.the job of bolstering convictions, devotion and a steadying perspective on reality, the theologians and sociologists say, with social action derived from that prior function. If churches simply join secular forces in good causes, such as struggles for social justice, without fueling the religious roots of it, the church is "committing institutional suicide," says the Rev. John Neuhaus of Brooklyn, a Lutheran. He says the health of the churches requires that they be "distinctive enough to warrant real gut commitment" by deepening awareness of ultimate values and purpose.

Without that, he says, churches lose their vitalizing core. They also are "denying the world the distinctive perception and resources of the Christian community," he says. He and the other church thinkers, participating in a recent conference sponsored here by the United Church of Christ on problems of church growth, all are advocates of applying religious principles in action to improve social conditions. But they noted a balancing trend in mainline denominations those which have been most active on social issues and whose membership has sagged to restore more emphasis on the rudimentary task of nourishing of basic concepts and principles. Dr.

Paul Harrison, a Baptist and professor of religious studies at Penn State University, says the "first purpose of the church is worship," which means developing a "relationship with the eternal" as a basis for viewing secondary issues. However, he says the drama of worship has been "lost in the modern world," and with that "dramatic enactment of actions of this year's religion being lost, the heart of General Assembly relating to religion has been eclipsed." church-state situations: federal tax reform, international peace, observance of the U.S. Bicentennial and proposed changes in ministry to the military. Regular worship services at the church are held at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.

each Sunday. The interim minister is Dr. Ralph Evans. Margaret Allen, soloist, will present a concert at Calvary Baptist Church, 1313 Apache Avenue, on Sunday morning, at the regular worship service according to the pastor, B.W Dougharty. Born and reared Oklahoma, the daughter of a Baptist minister, now lives in Oklahoma, where her husband' Dr.

Lloyd V. Allen is a professor of pharmacy at the University of Oklahoma. The public is invited to hear Mrs. Allen as she sings and brings her persona! testimony of her faith in Jesus Christ. She has sung extensively revivals, concerts, past conferences and on radio and television.

She has recorded an album. Seminary president to preach Guest, minister at the First Presbyterian Church, Santa Fe, on Sunday, will be the Rev. James I. McCord, Th.D., president of Princeton Theological Seminary 1959. Dr.

McCord is distinguished as a pastor, scholar, lecturer and administrator, not only in the Presbyterian Church but in the World Council of Churches, the World Alliance of Reformed Churches and the Christ! Church throughout the world. He has lectured and preached extensively in Western and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, Australia and New Zealand. Dr. McCord will preach at the 8:30 and lla.m. services.

The 9 o'clock contemporary worship service at Presbyterian Church continue its review of Robert Bandy's book "A Christian America" with a discussion of slavery, prohibition and social gospel on Sunday. Holt Priddy, a member of the congregation, will bring sermon and lead the terword," which is a general discussion of the topic of the day. On Sunday, August 3, John Park Lee, a leading layman in the denomination, will talk on 'our "When the black folk walk into the white church they say, 'You don't have anything going he observed. "And I think they're right." The Rev. Dr.

Max Stackhouse, professor of ethics at Andover Newton Theological School in Newton Centre, said the vitality of any group, religious or secular, depends on some kind of "doctrine at its core." Polytheism seen rising in U.S. By GEORGE W.CORNELL AP Religion Writer ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) are multiplying in America. In contrast to the traditional monotheistic view of one universal God recognized through events of Jewish- Christian history, there is a rising, mixed polytheism. That is a conclusion drawn these days by numerous religious and social analysts.

It's apparent "in the proliferation of cults," says Dr. Robert Ellwood, a religious sociologist at the University of Southern California and a specialist on new religions in modern culture. "Withdrawal groups," he calls them. He says they diverge irom historic concepts of "chur- chtype groups oriented to normative values of society and family. In the cults, stronger Dr.

Walter Martin, a professor at the Melodyland School of Theology here, says the cults have "become very powerful in the United States" and display a "semantic jungle" of religious terms and ideas about divinity. "The problem in dealing with culls is that words undergo redefinition," he says. "This makes for mult'ifarious definitions of God, a kind of pantheism or polytheistic theology that does not bear any relation to historic religion." David L. Miller, associate professor of religion at Syracuse University, sees evidence of the shift in current "interest in the occult, in magic, in extraterrestrial life, in Hindu India and Buddhist Japan, in multidemoned China, in sorcery, in 'new religions' and many other meaning systems hitherto foreign." College students now demand of Greece are our heritage "massive and total access to all Sooner or later, it Is they who the gods of men, Eastern and will return." Western, primitive and Some scholars suggest there modern, heretical and orthodox, mad and sane," he writes in a book recently issued by Harper and Row, called "The New Poly theism: Rebirth of the Gods and Goddesses." Citing ancient cultural roots of American democracy, he 'says, "The gods and goddesses are contemporary tendencies toward conditions of ancient Rome, when minority Judaism and fledgling Christianity were part of a scene dominated by the official Roman pantheon of gods. Ellwood and Martin, who spoke here a recent annua 1 meeting of the Religion Newswriters Association, including news reporters of religion from across the country, noted the rapid growth of various closely communal cults.
