A6 THE TAOS NEWS Thursday, Dec. 30, 1993 UNM-Taos land gift finalized; construction to come in By Rick Romanclto The Taos News "One of the most important steps in the enhancement of higher education in Taos" was taken as the Taos Municipal Schools board of education voted to accept the donation of 40 acres of land from the W.F. Klauers family of Dubuque, Iowa, during a special meeting Tuesday (Dec. 28). Bob Romero, a board member and former Taos Educational Center director, added he believed the acquisition was "a truly historic step." Another 40 acres adjacent to the land i.

planned to be donated in the near future, according to James Brandenburg, an attorney for the Klauers, who presented the deed to the board. Now that the deed is finally in hand, ground-breaking is set to begin on a new University of New Mexico-Taos community college campus about a year from now, "This will now allow for a permanent facility for higher education," Romero said. "I'm ecstatic and excited," Augustine Martinez, UNM- Taos director, said about the land transfer. "It's a big plus and can only mean good things for the community." Located 1.2 miles south of Ranchos de Taos off State Road 570 across from the entrance to the Taos Country Club golf course, the land will be owned by the off-campus school board, whose members are the Taos Dead man's family sues for burial By Alisa Duncan The Taos News Recently acquitted Tracee Anaya received notice Dec. 17 that she was being sued for funeral and other expenses resulting from the death of her husband, Leonard, whom Anaya killed in a domestic dispute.

The civil complaint, filed Dec. 9 in Magistrate Court by Connie Anaya, mother of the deceased, seeks $5,000 from the defendant. Connie Anaya claimed that funeral expenses cost $3,889.35 while incidentals totaled $1,110.65. Anaya was found not guilty Nov. 15 of manslaughter in Leonard Anaya's death.

Jurors said the prosecution failed to prove Tracee Anaya did not act in self-defense when she mortally stabbed her Anaya claimed that she was only defending herself when she stabbed her husband June 20, 1993. She claimed Leonard Anaya attacked her with a metal broom and had told her to "get a knife and defend herself." While Anaya was being held at the Taos County Adult Detention Center she was allowed to visit the funeral home, where the body of her husband was being prepared for burial. Leonard Anaya's family made several calls of complaint t6 the Eighth Judicial District Attorney's office regarding the visit. An aerial view of the 80-acre land donation south of Taos board of education, Alfred Cordova, director of special services for the school district, said. An attorney for the Klatiefs.

Mark Cowan, said at a school board meeting Dec. 14 that a provision was included at one time which specified that UNM was to remain the parent institution for the facility. However, that provision was rescinded during the negotiation process. This means, he said, no matter what parent institution will oversee the campus in the future, the land and whatever facilities are built upon it will remain the property of the district. Martinez said members of the UNM planning office already are making preliminary plans for construction of the new facility.

Cordova said funding for the buildings is planned to come from a $1.6 million legislative appropriation which recently was tended. Additional funding is hoped to come from the legislative session, Cordova said. One of the main items of' interest to persons living in the area surrounding the new cam-' pus is the issue of utilities. Cordova said since it lies outside the town limits there are no gas lines, electrical wiring or a sewer system lead-: ing to the land. He said as far as he knows the electricity and gas installation will be paid for with the $1.6 million, while an independent septic system may be built.

A ceremony to present the donation to the public is planned for sometime in January, according to board president Joseph McGinnis. Skiing Rio Taos Junior High School student Kuim Hatch starts the season at Ski Rio with a jump from one of the black diamond runs at the top of the ski area. The area opened to the public for the first time in five years Monday (Dec. 27) with 300 skiers exploring the area's 500 acres and 32-inch snow base. Public affairs director Bernie Torres said that while the area can handle more then 2,000 skiers a day, a limit of about 300 a day will be maintained for the limited 30-day season the resort will have this year.

Paul Larkin Area tribes to benefit from foundation grant to fight substance abuse By Rick Romancito The Taos News Taos and Picuris Pueblos, along with the Jicarilla Apache Indian Tribe, will benefit from a two-year, $150,000 grant awarded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to create alcohol and substance abuse prevention programs in their communities, according to Taos Pueblo Community Partnership director Eileen Lujan. A celebration announcing receipt of the grant was held at the Taos Pueblo Community Center Dec. 22. The New Mexico tribes are among 15 American Indian "organizations and tribal entities serving Indian and Native people across the States" who are expected to receive "over $2.2 million in grant support I from the foundation to address substance abuse, including the use of cultural values and traditions," according to a press release. Although the sole grant for New Mexico was awarded to Taos Pueblo, it is designed to serve the three tribes equally, Lujan said.

"I see the grant as being a continuation of the community partnership program," Lujan said. "The way we're seeing this new program that.l we would be able to hire other people who would be able to work in the community inside and actually work with the people here." Dealing with alcohol and substance abuse problems in these communities is "like the analogy of the mosquito," Tom Teegarden, director of Taos Pueblo's Office of Community and Economic Development, said to the gathering. "You can keep slapping at individual mosquitoes all you want, but as long as there is a swamp, there will always be mosquitoes. What we're trying to do with this grant is to drain the swamp." The grant is part of the first phase of a $13.5 million initiative by the foundation called "Healthy Nations: Reducing Substance Abuse Among Native Americans."
